PAST SCHOOL PROJECTS AND EVENTS

CWC School Garden Restoration

On December 3, 2022, Citizens of the World (CWC) West Valley in Winnetka and Blue Sky LA hosted a school garden restoration event to replace the ivy in front of the school with California native roses, plant native shrubs throughout campus, plant trees in front of the school, and restore the primary school garden.

Volunteers helped improve the local air quality and provide an excellent place for students to enjoy shade during the hotter months.

Voces Magnet Tree Planting

On November 4, 2022, Blue Sky LA partnered with Voces Magnet Eco Club in Sun Valley on a tree planting, tree giveaway, and movie night event at their H.O.P.E Garden-themed Dia de Los Muertos. BSLA partnered with Voces Magnet to host a community Dia De Los Muertos event to celebrate the day of the dead and gave away trees for members of the community. The community was excited to get more trees as they are affected by poor air quality due to the 5 freeway nearby.

Clean Air Day Event

On October 5, 2022, BSLA partnered with the entire Allegiance Alliance Leichtman-Levine Environmental Science High School for a clean air day pledge event to celebrate California’s clean air day. BSLA had a booth at the school during lunchtime where the green ambassadors’ student club volunteers recruited other students to sign their clean air day pledges.

Root Down LA Soil Remediation

On August 27, 2022, RootDown LA is hosting a soil improvement project at George Washington Carver Middle School’s garden. Volunteers of all ages and skills are invited to help us complete a soil remediation and learn about our local air quality. Soil remediation involves removing contaminants from the soil, which will improve air and soil quality, helping the garden and local community.

Community Urban Gardens

Eco Urban Gardens hosted a volunteer event at Rosemead High School focusing on the completion of a Vegetated Bioswale and the foundation of a Greenhouse. Eco Urban Gardens is a nonprofit whose mission is to combat food insecurity through urban agriculture and regenerative living. They teach students to grow their own food through farm to school programs to help students feel connected to the environment.
